How do you prioritize your website on search engines like Google?

Big topic. I specialize in Search Engine Optimization or SEO. If I go into Google and type in "virtual assistant," there are 1.4 million results. This means that the field is competitive, and getting a top spot will be fairly difficult. It's not impossible to do, but it's very time-consuming and no one can guarantee that you'll even be on the first three pages of the results. (If you go into Google and type in "small business coach," there are 12 million results and I come up #1 and #2.)

So the first question you need to ask yourself is: do I want to spend a lot of time doing all the work necessary (it's not difficult work, just time-consuming), or do I want to simply pay for top advertising spot which will put me on the first page tomorrow?
