| Do you recommend that people
create their own websites, or hire a professional? |
It depends on two things: How
comfortable are you with technology and computers? And do
you want to spend your time on website design and maintenance,
or can your time be spent more wisely somewhere else where you
can create more revenue for your business? I believe we all
need to evaluate our Core Competencies, those things we do
really, really well that only we can do, and that move our
business forward. If you enjoy computer work and
researching how to design websites, then by all means do it
yourself. If, on the other hand, you find it frustrating
-- or you have other work that is more enjoyable and more
profitable -- then hire a professional to design and maintain
the site for you. If you want to design your own site and just
want to do the basics, I recommend that people use Microsoft
FrontPage. It's easy to learn (similar to MS Word), and
lots of computer stores offer FrontPage classes. If you'll
be designing or maintaining your site in conjunction with a web
designer, you might want to use the same software that he/she
uses, just for consistency. Some software packages, such
as DreamWeaver, are intended for professional designers and you
might find it harder to learn than FrontPage. Check your
local community college or computer training center to see if
they offer FrontPage or DreamWeaver classes. |
